Draga Doncila Pop

I’m a computer scientist and open-source developer working at the intersection of scientific computing and bioimage analysis. I completed a Bachelor of Computer Science at Monash University, where I became interested in applying computational methods to microscopy and other scientific imaging problems. I am now in the final throes of a PhD in computer science at Monash, focusing on methods and tools for analysing time-lapse microscopy data, particularly cell tracking.

Alongside my research, I’ve been deeply involved in the scientific Python open-source ecosystem. I’m a Core Team and Steering Council member of napari — a multidimensional image viewer, contributing to its technical development, operational management and community governance. I’m also a member of the Live Image Tracking Tools organization — a community of researchers working to improve the software ecosystem for cell tracking. I’ve helped co-develop traccuracy, a Python package for evaluating cell-tracking solutions, and contributed to the design and development of GEFF — a spatiotemporal Graph Exchange File Format.

Ever since undergrad, where I first worked with microimaging and remote-sensing imaging data, I’ve thought scientific imaging is pretty darn neat! I’m constantly blown away by how much imaging data is out there, and it’s a pleasure to dedicate my career to helping, in some small part, make sense of it all.

I also love teaching, mentoring and tutoring folks starting out on their programming journeys, and have spent quite a bit of time hosting introductory tutorials, programming bootcamps, and informal one-on-one sessions.

Away from the keyboard, I love reading (I’m part of 2.5 book clubs, which is probably .5 too many), cooking, baking, and recently I’ve been getting into making pottery!

I’m now excited and honoured to be a founding member of the Image Cooperative, where I will continue dedicating my time to all things imaging — developing, maintaining and supporting free, open and sustainable imaging visualization and analysis tools.
